a new car
Yes, I have a new car now.  I still have the 2004 Jeep Liberty, but it is now for sale.  Instead, you'll see me driving around town in my new 2012 Kia Soul Luxury.  Here are some pics.

So why buy a Kia Soul?  Well, fuel economy.

Kia Soul (2.0 engine) Jeep Liberty (3.7ℓ engine) Kia Rio5 (1.6ℓ engine)
7.9 /100km city 5.9 /100km highway 164hp 16-18 /100km city 10.1 /100km highway 210hp 6.8 /100km city 4.9 /100km highway 138hp
36 mpg city 48 mpg highway 123lb-ft torque 14-15 mpg city 22 mpg highway 235lb-ft torque 43 mpg city 58 mpg highway 123bl-ft torque

I really still do love my Jeep Liberty.  Like driving a 4x4 Cadillac.  I get looks from people driving by 'cause it's such a nice looking ride.  But... it uses way too much fuel.

One problem is that I'll be paying for it for the next 3 years.  One solution is that Kia offered 0% financing.

Another problem is that a little engine cannot pull a trailer.  I'd originally chosen the Kia Rio5.  It has a 1.6 engine with only 138 horsepower.  Certainly enough for one guy going to work and back and certainly enough to carry Mom & Floyd in tow, but it's not enough to pull a little trailer.  It could probably only pull a 220kg (500 pound) trailer.  But the Kia Soul will probably be able to pull a 500kg trailer.  It has 78% of the horsepower of the Liberty but has 54% of the engine displacement and only 30-50% of the fuel city / 58% highway.  Seems a little odd, but the Liberty is an SUV with a heavy body and, to be fair, is a 4-wheel-drive.

Another problem is that, every time I drive the Liberty, I think to myself that I want to keep it.  One solution is to know that it's basically a machine and hence cannot give me happiness.  Another solution might be to find another job, a fourth teaching gig someplace.

But if I do that, I'll for sure not be able to get myself a campervan anytime within the next 3 years.  Solutions?  1) Build a camper trailer.  2) Buy an older lightweight trailer.  3) Sell the Jeep, buy a campervan for traveling, and have done with it.

a new haircut
Actually, it's the same old one but done by a different person.  Why?  Coupon in the mail for $5 off.

a new floor
Okay, so it's pretty much the same as the hair - not new, just done again using the same materials as before.  Floyd and I fixed the hole in the floor ...

a new car
I bought a new car.  It's not here yet.  But I closed the deal Friday.  I'm now trying to sell my Jeep.  Can't have two vehicles.  More later when it arrives.

going big-time
When you know what's right...
Ottawa family turns denial of parking space into human rights complaint  ...it doesn't matter how big the adversary is.  (Except when you're stuck in a foreign country with no power to do anything about anything, that is.)

really bad parking
This guy should have to pay for my parking spot, too.  "Hey, buddy, cough up another buck fifty."

cheap greens
As it happens, I accidentally came across a green parking meter (green means good for 10-hour parking) whose price hadn't been increased last year.  So, rather than paying $2.50 for 7 hours & 8 minutes, I now pay $1.50 for 7 hours & 30 minutes.  Good, right?  Except that it took me about 4 months to come to this realization.
